DIY Advent Calendar

December 2, 2012

I debated over so many ideas for an advent calendar but after some though and a few changes along the way this is what I ended up with. A lovely little bunting style garland to hand on the wall. Each “flag” is a pocket that is filled with a little something, but I can’t tell you what as that will ruin the surprise for a certain someone. Well except todays of course which was opened this morning and in it was a voucher for entry into the Christmas market and a hot apple cider.

Making it is simple. Start buy cutting your selected paper into squares or you could use scrapbooking or origami paper to save you the hassle, I used silver wrapping paper that I cut into 19cm x 19cm squares.
Now place double sided tape on one side of the square and roll it into a cone shape making sure the tape secures it.
Fill your pocket with whatever you fancy. It could be chocolates and candy or things to go and do together.
Pull the triangle flap of the cone down and secure with tape.
Cut out the number tags, you can make these any shape you like. I hand drew on the number but you could also print them out if you prefer.
Secure the numbers to the sealed pockets . You might want to make not of what is in each one if some contain activities.
Fold the Ribbon over the top of the pocket and staple on both sides.
Let the count down and surprises begin!

Hello! Thought you might enjoy knowing that I’m using this Advent design for one of my grown boys this year. Ever since the two of them left home to work at a resort where Christmas was high season and coming home was unlikely, I’ve been making each of them an Advent calendar every year to help the season seem less lonely than it would have with just a pile of gifts from home sitting on a shelf, that they opened by themselves in two minutes on Christmas morning. This year, the elder son, now a married man, is getting a fabric reusable calendar, but the second will be getting silver icicles! (In both, I’ll put candy, a few dares/challenges, and this year, passwords to open each of the individually-password-protected Christmas songs on a flash drive they will find in the first pocket. It’s the music of their childhood Christmasmases…but they will only get to open one new song a day!)

Thanks for a beautiful, simple design!
